Weight loss: Breakfast should be largest meal says expert
“When trying to lose weight, it is generally good advice not to skip breakfast,” said Dr Phelan.
“Eating breakfast not only sets you up for the day but is crucial for mental alertness and allowing our brains to function to the best of their ability.”
Dr Phelan added: “For people trying to lose weight I generally recommend that they eat breakfast at around 9am.
“For many people, this will be later than their normal time, but it will reduce the gap between breakfast and lunch.”

Dr Phelan elaborated: “This will make snacking between breakfast and lunch will be less likely.”
Personal trainer Aroosha Nekonam, from Ultimate Performance, stated that what you eat is more important than what time you eat when trying to lose weight.
“When it comes to weight loss, the reality is the timing of when you eat breakfast is nowhere near as important as what you eat for breakfast,” said Nekonam.
While a personal fan of eating breakfast, Nekonam is an advocate for eating the “right foods”.

Nekonam explained: “Every meal you eat, irrespective of timing, should include 20-30g of lean protein, vegetables, and ‘healthy’ fats.
“Just because you’ve delayed your breakfast, it doesn’t mean you can then overeat on sugary meals and get away with it.
“Eating a bowl of highly processed cereal can have a very different physiological and psychological effect on your health compared to free-range eggs.”
What does Dr Phelan recommend for breakfast?
“For people trying to lose weight I always recommend that they switch to protein-rich breakfasts,” said Dr Phelan.
“My favourite at the moment is an omelette with turkey bacon, peppers and spring onions.”
Dr Phelan added: “Starting your day with a protein-rich meal is a great way to feel fuller for longer meaning that you are less likely to reach for that midmorning snack.”
What about lunch?
Personal trainer Nekonam said spacing meals throughout the day, up to four hours apart, can help with digestion.
As for weight loss in general, Dr Phelan said: “The most important factor in losing weight is to be in a calorie deficit. This means consuming fewer calories each day than you use.”
