Vernon Kay diet: I’m A Celeb star says he is ‘wasting away’ after losing weight in camp

Weight loss: When you eat can help results says expert

Vernon Kay, 46, perhaps best known for his presenting roles on All Star Family Fortunes, Just The Two of Us, Beat the Star and 1000 Heartbeats, is taking part in this years I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here!. How much weight has he lost while on the show?

With the campmates surviving on minimal food for the weeks they are in there, Vernon has spoken on his weight loss.

While the food is reportedly worked out by nutritionists to make sure the contestants are getting enough calories, it has been a significant drop in food for Vernon.

The presenter said: “I look in the mirror and I’m like, ‘Come on, I’m wasting away’ but it is what it is.”

Vernon’s campmates Giovanna Fletcher and Jessica Plummer also mentioned that they think he is looking “really narrow”.

The presenter’s wife, Tess Daly also spoke of her concern on ITV’s Lorraine saying she was worried about Vernon “not eating”.

She said: “Oh my goodness, it feels like he has been away forever.

“I think about him every moment of every day and I watch him every night.

“Yeah, he is doing brilliantly and it’s lovely watching him but it’s nerve-wracking, it really is.

“I worry about him being cold, about him not eating.”

Tess regularly posts photos of what the family eats on her social media including banana porridge with nuts, healthy salads and salad sandwiches with cream cheese.

The competition show, which sees contestants face gruelling trials in order to get food, relies on the stars won in the challenges in order for the campmates to eat.

How many stars the celebrity brings back from the trial determines how much food the camp gets that night.

Campmate Russell Watson, who left camp three days before the trial, shed a whopping 20lbs while in the castle.

Speaking on his weight loss as well as Vernon’s, Russell explained: “Vernon was telling me before the show he was eating 5,000 calories a day and he has gone down to 600-700 calories”.

The recommended calorie intake for an adult male is around 2,500 according to the NHS.

This means the campmates food intake while in the camp is significantly below the guided calorie intake.

Even the sweet treats that the celebrities can win are minute in size.

Paralympic athlete Hollie Arnold MBE was the first celebrity to be voted off the show and speaking on The Daily Drop, she explained that her stomach “has shrunk so much”.

She explained that she even struggled to eat the treats she was met with after leaving the castle.

Fellow campmate Shane Richie, who came fourth in the competition after being voted off last night has also lost weight according to his wife, Christie.

She told The Mirror: “I am really surprised at how different he looks. We knew he would lose some weight and in some respects he went in there looking at it like a boot camp.

“To see that jawline after all these years, it was like greeting an old friend! I haven’t seen it in years. I wonder if he can keep all the weight off.”

For those wanting to lose some weight, the NHS recommends doing it safely and losing around one to two pounds a week.

The website says: “The best way to lose weight is to make long-term changes to diet and physical activity that result in a steady rate of weight loss.”
