Dr Michael Mosley is on a mission to help as many people as possible get fit and healthy and lose weight. He is the expert behind The Fast 800, the New 5:2 and the Way of Life diets and recently, he revealed how you can lose one and a half stone in just three months.
During the winter months, it is hard to keep positive if you’re on a weight loss journey.
But Michael said now is “not the moment to tuck into comfort foods and give way to despair”.
The Fast 800 diet sees 800 calories consumed daily to promote “rapid weight loss”.
After a couple of weeks following this diet, people are encouraged to move onto the New 5:2, which sees 800 calories a day consumed two days a week, and the other five days, a “healthy Mediterranean-style diet” is followed, with no calorie restriction, just sensible portions.
This is also known as intermittent fasting.
But what are the benefits of this way of dieting?
Eating 800 to 1,000 calories “a day of well-balanced and nutritious food is a proven way to lose weight fast, effectively and keep it off – and is based on many years of research,” Dr Michael said.
He added: “If you are significantly overweight, particularly around the belly, losing weight can bolster your immune system, and improve your sleep, which in turn will help reduce stress and anxiety.
“It will also reduce your risk of certain cancers, including breast cancer, and improve heart health – still one of the UK’s biggest killers. It can help prevent dementia, too.”
One way to “rocket-boost initial weight loss” is to cut calories to 800 a day, for “at least eight weeks”.
But not everyone can stick to 800 calories a day for long, hence why Dr Michael created the New 5:2.
He explained: “Will you still lose weight fast? Yes, particularly if you start with the rapid weight-loss approach and then move to the New 5:2.
“How much will you lose? Well, based on a number of studies…people lose an average of around one and a half stone (22 lb or 10 kg) in three months.”
As for how to “stay slim for life”, Dr Michael suggests a “low-carb, high-protein Mediterranean-style” diet.
Health experts apparently class it as “the healthiest diet on the planet”.
But what does a Mediterranean-style diet consist of?
Dr Michael explained: “Being high in protein, it will help reduce hunger and ensure you maintain your muscle mass.
“This matters because you need your muscles to get around but also because, unlike fat, muscle is metabolically active, which means your muscles burn calories even when you are asleep.
“Eating 50g of protein a day will stop your metabolic rate from crashing as you lose weight.
“A lower metabolic rate means you burn fewer calories, so you will struggle to keep the weight off.
“The protein intake in this plan means you will find it much easier to keep the weight off long term,” he added.
The Mediterranean-style diet doesn’t demand you cut out whole food groups, so Dr Michael believes keeping your weight steady is “far more sustainable” with this diet.
