Kirstie Allsopp, 50, appears on Kirstie and Phil’s Love It or List It tonight on Channel Four. The two hosts will go head-to-head as they battle it out to convince homeowners to either sell or refurbish their homes.
As well as speaking openly about rising property prices and how they are impacting young people, Kirstie has recently talked about her weight in public.
The 50-year-old has shared her weight loss transformation, admitting that she piled on a few pounds during her early 40s.
Aware of the health risks that can affect women over the age of 50, Kirstie decided to do something about it as she aged.
Being overweight, especially at a later stage in life, can lead to serious health conditions, such as coronary heart disease, some types of cancer, and type two diabetes, according to the NHS.
It is also more difficult for women over the aged of 50 to lose weight, or avoid weight gain, because of the menopause.
Research shows that the menopause slows women’s metabolism, according to Dr Laila Kaikavoosi, founder of the Online Menopause Centre.
Older women’s muscle mass is also reduced, which in turn results in reduction in metabolism.
However, Kirstie realised before hitting 50 that she needed to do something about her weight.
When the presenter was in her early 40s, she told Mail Online: “I decided that I was being irresponsible as a parent and a partner, and it had to go.”
A mother to two children, Kirstie decided to focus first on her diet, ensuring to eat only three good meals a day.
She said: “I do not leave the house without having breakfast.
“What is key is having five hours between meals and not having anything except water during those five hours.”
Drinking plenty of water during the day is not only beneficial for general health and wellbeing, but also helps slimmers stay fuller for longer.
As well as eating a healthy breakfast every day, Kirstie started eating fewer carbohydrates, cutting potatoes out of her diet completely.
Speaking to The Sun, she explained: “For me, one of my things is that potatoes don’t suit me.
“I don’t eat them anymore. And aubergines don’t agree with me.”
Kirstie has also cut down on her alcohol intake, preferring drinks which have fewer calories in them.
The presenter said: “Wine doesn’t agree with me so now I drink vodka martinis.”
She added: “I really eat more greens. I order two salads now.
“I haven’t really been a pasta person for a while. It’s viewing vegetables as carbs. It’s always the beans, the broccoli – there’s no need for potatoes.”
Kirstie also exercises regularly to slim down, saying: “On a working day, I get up at 6.15am and I’m straight into my exercise kit for a workout.
“I run up hills and then walk down them.
“At 7am I wake the kids.”
