James explained that eating fish twice a day is one of the lifestyle changes he made to lose weight. He said: “What could be simpler than pan-frying a little bit of salmon and serving it with some great new potatoes and seasonal veg?”
The chef also revealed he swapped unhealthy snacks for fresh fruit and cut out fizzy drinks completely.
Instead, he consumes two litres of water a day. “The way I lost weight is by cutting down on soft drinks. I drink a lot of water, two litres every day. I still eat exactly the same.
“Water is the key. As you get older, I realised I don’t need to go to the gym, I’m working [in the kitchen] all the time anyway,” he explained.
“Water keeps your brain healthy and it keeps your skin healthy and it keeps you focused – it’s crazy when you give up soft drinks how much more your brain feels alive, it’s very weird.”
He said: “There’s been no gym, no running or anything like that. I’ve been eating exactly the same things. It’s just the water. It’s true.”
The celebrity chef added losing weight is “a balance of everything, it’s getting off your arse and doing more and not eating less, but eating a variety of different things”.
The chef explained he is “not much of a drinker” so cutting out fizzy drinks completely was what “really” helped him drop three stone.
He said: “I don’t really drink much alcohol, only about three or four units a month anyway.
“So I’m not much of a drinker – it was cutting out the fizzy drinks was the main thing for me.
“I think the problem when you’re travelling from A to B all the time, you need that sugar hit, I don’t drink tea or coffee, so fizzy drinks was the way I got it.”
The chef continued: “There’s been no gym, no running or anything like that. I’ve been eating exactly the same things. It’s just the water. It’s true!”
Healthline recommended adults consume an average of 11.5 cups (2.7 litres) a day for women and 15.5 cups (3.7 litres) a day for men.
This includes fluids from water, beverages like teas and juice, and from food.
Drinking water can help people lose weight as “drinking about a half hour before meals can also reduce the number of calories you end up consuming,” the health site explained.
“This might happen because it’s easy for the body to mistake thirst for hunger.
“Overall, it seems that drinking adequate amounts of water, particularly before meals, may give you a boost in managing appetite and maintaining a healthy body weight, especially when combined with a healthy eating plan.”
James added: “I think when Covid hit, everyone started to re-evaluate their lives and what can you do better, and I think it was just a different focus on life.
“I lost three stone, and for me the main thing was cutting out fizzy drinks and I now drink 2.5 litres of water every day.
“When you get to 50, when you get the phone call and hear some of your mates are not very well, or that some of your mates have passed away, you just have a different outlook on life.
“You still have the same drive, but how you achieve that, you do things slightly differently.”
