Dark chocolate: 2018 study reveals the health benefits
Channel 4 weight loss series, How to Lose Weight Well is back on TV and the most recent episode saw two friends – 37-year-old Heena and 38-year-old Dhruti – trying the Coffee and Chocolate Diets. Viewers were particularly drawn to Dhruti’s challenge, the chocolate diet, but it sounds too good to be true, doesn’t it? Express.co.uk talks you through the ins and outs of this delicious chocolate-based diet.
What is the chocolate diet?
The idea of the chocolate diet is to eat dark chocolate in moderation.
The TV show hosts explained: “This diet is about training your sweet tooth away with low sugar chocolate.
“Before and after each meal, Dhruti will eat dark chocolate with over 70 percent cocoa, which is also higher in antioxidants.”
Eating more of the ‘good chocolate’ is supposed to help you stop eating the ‘bad chocolate’.

The Chocolate Diet is inspired by Dr Will Clower’s book Eat Chocolate, Lose Weight.
One of Dr Clower’s clients lost more than 100 pounds on this diet and so the book was born.
The doctor wanted to bust the myth of chocolate being bad for you, since it actually is packed with antioxidants that can help you lose weight.
The Chocolate Diet plan takes eight weeks to complete in total.
You can either buy the book to find out all the details, or just give it a go following the two key rules.
The rules state that you must eat one ounce of solid dark chocolate daily.
It has to be dark chocolate with over 70 percent cocoa and you must split the amount up so you eat a bit before and after every balanced meal.

Does the chocolate diet work?
The chocolate diet does work, as long as you eat healthily and follow the rules.
In the TV show, participant Dhruti was allowed to eat three meals a day and drink alcohol in moderation.
The chocolate diet plan aims to reduce your sugar cravings, and so Dhruti had to quit sugar – including fizzy drinks.
In just two weeks, Dhruti lost 10lbs after following the rules to the letter.
She went from 12 stone 3 to a slim 11 stone 7 in just 14 days.
Even though the chocolate diet worked for Dhruti, this may not be the way for everyone to lose weight.
The NHS website has a free 12-week diet and exercise plan that promotes safe and sustainable weight loss.
This plan will help you lose weight at a safe rate of 1lb to 2lbs each week, and you’re more likely to keep it off.
