The non-dairy milk market has grown exponentially over the last few years—so much so that the dairy industry saw a $1.1 billion revenue decline from 2017 to 2018. It can be pretty difficult to decide which type and brand of milk is best for you with the plethora options out there these days, but one of our new favorites is one you likely haven’t heard of.
Mooala is a Texas-based brand of organic, dairy-free beverages on a philanthropic mission. Its founder Jeff Richards was diagnosed with lactose intolerance in 2016 and had to make the switch to dairy alternatives. A PR representative for the company told Cooking Light Richards saw a need for tasty and organic plant-based beverages that were made with real ingredients, so he created a line of almond, oat, and banana-based alternative milks. Even better, every Mooala purchase made benefits budding entrepreneurs in impoverished countries. And we’re kind of obsessed with their mascot—a koala-cow hybrid of cuteness.
Stay up to date on what healthy means now.
Mooala currently has six different flavors of non dairy milks—original and vanilla bean almond milks, original, chocolate, and strawberry banana milks, and coconut oat milk. All of their products are made without added sugars, gluten, or carrageenan. Here’s what our staff thought about the flavors we tried:
Coconut Oat Milk
Mooala’s organic coconut oat milk is the industry’s first refrigerated organic oat milk to hit the U.S. market. Staffers loved this 50-calorie oat milk for its slightly sweet, cinnamon-y flavor, reminiscent of the milk left over from a big bowl of Cinnamon Toast Crunch. Several staffers said they would love this with cereal, splashed into a cup of coffee, or whipped in a frothy latte.
Original Banana Milk
We’d been waiting to get our hands on some banana milk, and our staff was seriously impressed with this 60-calorie beverage. One taster even said that this banana milk beats almond milk, as they loved the subtle cinnamon flavor. This milk has a hint of a banana bread flavor, which surprisingly tastes amazing as a creamy beverage, and several staffers said they would love to add this to their morning smoothies or baked goods.

Strawberry Banana Milk
This flavor was a staff-favorite, as it reminded them of the bottles of strawberry milk we drank as kids, and we would have never guessed it was made without added sugars. At only 70 calories, staff members found it was creamy and comforting, while still remaining a guilt-free treat.
Mooala is available in over 2,000 retailers nationwide, including Whole Foods and Wegmans. All of their products are sold in 48-ounce bottles ranging between $4.99-$7.99.
The non-dairy beverage brand is also about to expand their line with a dairy-free coffee creamer made from a blend of oats, almonds, and coconut cream—the first of its kind on the market. This 10-calorie creamer will also be made without any added sugar, making it a much healthier addition to your morning cup of coffee. We will keep you updated when it hits grocery shelves nationwide!
