Christmas lunch at the Windsor household is enjoyed at Sandringham, the residence where the Queen spends Christmas. The royals enjoy a huge amount of food on the day, including a big breakfast before their traditional church visit.

Then for lunch is a big three course meal.

Starter: Salad with shrimp or lobster

Main: Roast turkey with all the trimmings

Dessert: Christmas pudding with brandy butter

But that is not all. There is afternoon tea, which includes a chocolate Yule log and a Christmas cake.

In the evening there is an enormous buffet with 15 to 20 dishes.

This includes roast ham, turkey and rib roast, as well as seafood, veggies, gingerbread and another Christmas pudding.

Alcohol is served including cider and cherry brandy.

Royal Chef Darren McGrady, who was in the post from 1982 until 1998 and wrote his book Eating Royally; Recipes and Remembrances from a Palace Kitchen, revealed he also makes a number of additional dishes for the royals to enjoy over the season.

These include potted shrimp, beef Bourguignon and shredded Brussel Sprouts.

Also included in a bubble and squeak, a traditional potato dish, and a date and apple pastry made with apples from Sandringham’s orchard.

Royal Christmas dinner today is not entirely different from the past, showing just how well preserved the tradition of the Christmas meal is.

Menus from Queen Victoria’s Christmas dinner have survived and show us what perhaps the UK’s most iconic monarch ate on December 25.

While there are some recognisable dishes, many will wrinkle their noses as some of the courses.

It includes calf’s head consumme with truffle quenelles cock’s combs and mushrooms.

Also on the menu was carrot soup, salmon with Hollondaise Sauce, sole fillets and pheasant.

Roast beef was on the menu, with Yorkshire puddings, of course, followed then by the classic roast turkey with chestnuts and chipolata sausages.

Then there is roast pork with asparagus followed by mince pies, plum pudding and orange custards and cream.

Then came Baron of Beef, a wild boards head, a game pie, a woodcock pie and a foies gras terrine.
