The government guidelines for lockdown meant that takeaway stores were allowed to remain open, but many coffee shops and fast food outlets had to close down due to safety fears as the coronavirus pandemic worsened. However, chains such as Pret a Manger, Costa and Starbucks are slowly getting back up and running as new measures are put in place. Pret is the latest chain to expand its reopening plans with a total of 101 stores open across the UK.

Starbucks to reopen on Thursday with new menu
Pret initially opened just 10 of its locations near London hospitals in a bid to prioritise serving key workers and NHS staff. It then followed with a further 20 stores so that it had 30 restaurants open for takeaway and delivery only, as it enforces social distancing measures put in place for the lockdown.
On Monday Pret announced that a further 70 shops were opening across many major cities and towns around the UK, following a successful reopening plan. The chain is now able to offer takeaways and deliveries from over 100 outlets, with 55 opening in the capital.
Writing on the Pret website, the beloved sandwich store’s CEO Pano Christou said: “It’s been fantastic to see so many of you respecting the social distancing changes we’ve made in our reopened shops, and we’re extremely grateful for your support.
“This has given us the confidence to reopen a further 71 shops for takeaway and delivery (including in Birmingham, Brighton, Bristol, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Leeds and Manchester).”
The chief explained that there have been drastic changes made in stores to keep staff and customers safe, as it works to gradually reopen around the country.
“The Pret experience for both our customers and teams will continue to feel very different. For example, each shop will be fitted with Perspex screens at the tills, we will restrict the number of customers in our shops, we’ll provide hand sanitiser for customers, and face coverings to our Team Members who prefer to wear one.”
The company has also added social distancing floor markers to help keep customers apart, and is doing its bit to help the community. The chain is still offering a 50 percent discount to all NHS workers until May 15.
In the letter, the CEO wrote: “Gradually reopening our shops also means that we can work with more of our homeless charity partners across the UK, getting our unsold food to those who really need it.”
Customers can order their favourite Pret sandwiches, salads and sweet treats from its partner apps, Deliveroo, Uber Eats and Just Eat.
