Make Jamie Oliver’s hot toddy recipe for a ‘pick-me-up when it’s cold outside’

The nights are drawing in and the days are getting colder.

At this time of year many of us start to indulge a little more than we usually would in tasty foods and drinks.

This isn’t just because Christmas is coming up, but a natural response to the colder weather.

With this in mind it might be worth learning a new recipe, provided by Jamie Oliver.

On his website, the TV chef recommends trying a hot toddy.

This classic drink has its origins in India, and dates back as far as the 17th century.

It is defined as an alcoholic drink made with hot water, spices, and sugar.

Typically the alcohol used nowadays is whisky, which is a key component of Jamie’s version.

A “warming” whisky cocktail, he described this drink as “a lovely nightcap or pick-me-up when it’s cold outside”.

To make this drink you will need:

  • One and a half parts Dewar’s White Label Whisky
  • A third part honey syrup
  • Three parts hot water
  • Three dried cloves, per glass
  • Freshly squeezed lemon juice.

For the garnish you need:

  • A slice of lemon
  • Cinnamon sticks.


To make the drink, the recipe says to combine the whisky, ​honey ​syrup, hot water and cloves in a toddy ​g​lass.

Stir “gently” until this is completely combined. Then squeeze in the lemon juice, to taste. ​

As a final touch, remove the cloves, then garnish with ​a​ ​slice of lemon and cinnamon stick.​

According to a price checker provided alongside the recipe, the ingredients would come to £23.50 if bought from Tesco.

The whisky is, of course, the most pricey element at £16.95 for a 70CL bottle.

This recipe clocks in at 106 calories per serving, for those watching their diet.

Potential health benefits

While drinking alcohol comes with its health risks, the other components of this drink are known to have certain benefits.

Honey, for example, is rich in antioxidants which can help protect cells against damage.

It is also thought to protect against diabetes and heart issues.

Lemons are rich in vitamin C, something that can help protect against winter colds, and antioxidants.

And cinnamon is thought to have metabolism-boosting properties, aiding weight loss efforts.
