I’ll be honest with you: I could do without September. If you love it, my apologies. But I don’t do transitions well and have always found the month unsettling. Is it summer or is it fall? Settle down and pick one, September.
October, on the other hand, knows exactly what it is, which is why it happens to be one of my very favorite months. (Also July. Same reason.) October is great because it’s peak autumn: The air is crisp, I can wear sweaters again, and I can bake all the things. There are so many good foods to make in the kitchen this month — from breads to soups to sugary treats. Here are a handful of my favorites.
Lean into pumpkin spice.
Let’s put aside our posturing and just admit that there is something pretty darn comforting about pumpkin spice. You don’t need to buy the mug, but enjoy a coffee or go bake some quick bread. It’s good. And that’s okay!

Go apple picking.
Apple picking is a must-do on my fall bucket list every year. I love finding a bunch of different apples to eat and bake with. I tend to overdo it, though, and often spend the entire month trying to come out from under all the bushels I picked. Here are a few recipes that help.

There’s much more to love about October produce beyond pumpkins and apples. The famers markets and stores are full of fresh squash, tender Brussels sprouts, and sweet potatoes, as well as beets and mushrooms!
