If I could only eat one meal for the rest of my life, it would undoubtedly be pizza. In my opinion, there’s no better combination than quality dough, ooey-gooey cheese, and classic red sauce. And while I spent many years devouring slice after slice, my body can no longer handle an abundance of greasy pizza. Thankfully, Trader Joe’s launched a frozen Cauliflower Pizza Crust a few years back, which allowed me to still enjoy my favorite meal. And as of this past Spring, TJ’s welcomed another pizza crust alternative but this time with greens!
Even if you’re not a green veggie lover, I have a feeling you won’t be turning down TJ’s Broccoli & Kale Pizza Crust. Just like their cauliflower crust, this option is also gluten-free and uses just a few ingredients. Containing absolutely no egg or cheese, this pizza crust is made up of broccoli and black kale (which make up over 50% of the recipe), corn flour, water, cornstarch, potato starch, olive oil, and salt. Each slice has only 70 calories compared to a regular slice which has about 300. You might be alarmed when you see the color—it’s green. Bright green. Garish green.
So does it actually taste good?
Here’s the thing: there will never be an alternative that tastes just like the real thing. But if you’re a pizza lover like me, and also want to be health conscious, this is a happy medium. Think of it more as a thin crust pizza or flatbread that you can personalize to your liking. Load it with a few dollops of ricotta, pesto, and thinly sliced veggies or make a classic margarita. If you’re a meat lover, try adding some crumbled sausage, pepperoni, or crispy prosciutto.
Bottom line: even though regular pizza may be tastier, you’re going to feel much better after eating this lighter rendition. It’s also a great way to sneak more vegetables onto your children’s plates!
